Be a confident speaker and leader

Toastmasters Mission (excerpt)At the Airdrie Discovery Toastmasters Club, we’re working together to improve our speaking and leadership skills.

Who are Airdrie Discovery Toastmasters?

Club members come from different backgrounds and bring different needs. Their varied experiences make our meetings both entertaining and educational.

Everyone comes for the same purpose, though — self improvement. Some members are just starting the Toastmasters program, while others work on more advanced training techniques, but everyone helps everyone else, in an atmosphere of friendliness and mutual respect.

We all work at our own pace. Some members go as fast as they can, others like to go forward slowly. You will decide when the time is right for you to begin participating in meetings. Until then you can sit back, learn, and enjoy.

How can Toastmasters help me?

Toastmasters International provides a professionally designed program, one which will improve your ability to express your thoughts, ideas, and opinions, as well as develop your leadership potential.

Preparing talks using the Communication and Leadership manuals provides a systematic approach to organizing and delivering effective speeches — speeches that inform, persuade, and entertain. You will be introduced to techniques on identifying and stating your purpose, how to be persuasive, and how to clarify your meaning.

You’ll also become proficient at speaking off-the-cuff, without stress or strain. Through various activities, and especially the Table Topics section of our meetings, you will learn to speak confidently without notes.

The Toastmasters’ program includes effective evaluation of each member’s prepared and impromptu speeches. You and your fellow Toastmasters perform these evaluations in a constructive and helpful manner, using a prepared evaluation procedure that is an integral part of the program.

All meetings are run by parliamentary procedure, so you gain experience in conducting and participating in meetings.

The communication and leadership programs include specialized aids that help you improve your use of humour and your listening ability, organize conferences and meetings, conduct a business meeting, lead a group discussion, and serve as a chairman or member of a committee.

We invite you to become a part of this great organization, and look forward to helping you achieve your goal of becoming a more effective communicator and leader!

Who can join?

Our doors are always open to anyone 18 years of age or older. If you think you would be interested, come on a trial basis. You may attend as a guest as many times as you wish.

When and where do we meet?

We normally meet on the second and fourth Mondays of each month, from September through June.

Our meetings start at 7:30 p.m. and wind up at 9:30 p.m., but we recommend you arrive a few minutes before the meeting starts. That way we can help you get the most out of your visit.

We get together in the Meeting Room at the Calgary Co-Op store in Airdrie. Take the stairs immediately to your left as you enter the second set of doors into the store, and continue to the top of the stairs, to the only meeting space in that area.

Visit with us at one of these meetings and find out how we have fun while learning to master public speaking.
